Roy Hill is coming back to the place he helped build.
Hill was one of eight drivers who qualified in the first-ever mountain motor Pro Stock event in 1977 at the IHRA Winternationals. Soon Hill, who won 11 of 26 career final rounds, will be back with a Ford.
“We’re going to have a lot of fun doing this,” Hill said. “People ask why I am doing this. I’ll be 64 in October. Am I gonna drive? I’m gonna get my license. I’ll be a spare driver. No, but I’ve got more sense than to do that. Building a team is the big thing. People say where’s the money coming from? I don’t know yet. I’ve been using my own money. I can’t go out and sell something until I have something to sell.
Hill wouldn’t commit to driving but confirmed second-generation drag racer Vincent Nobile will be behind the wheel of his primary car. Hill said there’s a chance he may climb behind the wheel.
“First off, I’ve got to thank Roy for giving me the phone call and asking me to drive one of his race cars,” Nobile said. “Been on the sidelines for a little bit this year. Naturally, itching to go racing because this is what I love to do. This is what my father loves to do. Been doing it my whole life. There’s a lot that goes into these cars. They’re very similar to what I used to drive, a 500-inch car but a whole lot more power, a whole lot more torque.
“Naturally, you’re allowed to run both kinds of transmissions but pretty sure we’re going to be running the Lenco transmission. As far as that goes, need a lot of parts, need a lot of gear sets. We’re going to be running a Ram clutch that’s for sure. Obviously a John Kaase engine and we’re going to go from there. We’re just going to make it all happen. I’m going to do my best to make stuff happen as well but those are the main ingredients.”
Hill plans to have a pair of Mustangs built by Jerry Haas for the team.
“NHRA has given us a place to go out and create sponsors,” Hill said. “This is not little league, this is major league ball here. I think some of the people been racing the last three or four races, have come up with sponsors. I’ve seen them on the cars. They tell me they have. But that’s what NHRA is doing. It’s giving us a chance.
“All I can tell you is the fans are so excited about the NHRA having Mountain Motor Pro Stock. The potential that’s here for NHRA to take the ball and run it up on the mountain here. We’re up on the mountain right now and I want to be a part of it again.”
