Blake Copson Resets The Outlaw 10.5 Record At 3.77

Blake Copson jumped behind the wheel of his father’s Outlaw 10.5 C7 Corvette last year and quickly revealed his natural ability to wheel a small-tire machine. This season, Copson has demonstrated even more progression as a driver, picking up numerous round wins and, most recently, resetting the national Outlaw 10.5 record at Cecil County Dragway with a blistering 3.778 pass.

The 2019 season got off to a fairly late start for Copson and his team, but they were able to make the most of it by racking up two wins in just four races. Copson captured the Outlaw 10.5 record with a 1.028 60-foot time on his way to a 3.778 at 208 MPH, stealing the record from previous standard-bearer, John Carinci. All of this success is directly related to his team finally coming into their own as a cohesive unit.

“Last year was my rookie year and I still have a lot to learn, however, our team is really starting to gel. My driving has improved and also the communication between myself and our tuner, Josh Ledford, continues to grow each time out. We both have ultimate confidence in each other and that’s very important. Joel Hull, our primary mechanic, and Josh have worked their tails off this year to get a handle on things and it’s been amazing to witness. We all know our roles and understand that we must work together if we want to accomplish great things,” Copson says.

Now that the 2019 season is drawing to a close, Copson and his team are already looking forward to a big 2020.

“Our plans for next year include setting the record in Pro 275 and winning the class at Lights Out 11. We’re also going to try winning the Outlaw 10.5 national Championship next year. We couldn’t hit all of the major Outlaw 10.5 races this year but plan on it next year…it should be fun,” Copson says.

Running a top-level program takes a lot of help and Copson is very thankful for the assistance he’s received. With the continued support of his partners and team, Copson is confident they will see more success in the future.

“We have some really great companies behind us, like Gary Naughton Race Cars, Pro Line Racing, M&M Transmission, Fuel Tech, RK Racecraft, Homier Fabrications, Pro-Jay throttle bodies, and ProTorque racing converters. We can’t do what we do without these fine companies who support our racing program,” Copson explains.

If Copson’s strong finish to the 2019 season is any indication of things to come, there could be some insane runs coming next year.
